WE ADORE YOU, O CHRIST: WHAT TO DO DURING ADORATION

We've invited a few of our regular adorers to share their experiences with Eucharistic Adoration with us. If you've never been to Adoration or aren't sure what you would do if you went, this series will hopefully inspire you!

St. Michael's has Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. Learn more and become a volunteer adorer at stmichaelcary.org/Adoration.

Regular adorer Monica Augustine shares her ideas of how to spend time in Adoration:

“I grew up in a  very traditional Catholic family  and Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction was a regular practice in our Parish and participation was encouraged. I continued to take every opportunity to go for Adoration whenever possible and available, and I am very thankful that we have the weekly Adoration at St. Michael's.

The reason I go is the belief that we are obliged to Adore Jesus, to give Him thanks and make reparation for our sins. We need His mercy and forgiveness and we obtain this through prayer and our union with the Eucharistic Lord. It helps me to increase my faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

The following are some of the things I do during Eucharistic Adoration. I learned them over the years from different parishes, Charismatic retreat/prayer groups, and 'Adoration Companion' books.

  1. Praise/ Thanksgiving and worship: In silence, I thank God and praise Him for the blessings in my life. I try to remember and recollect my past and thank God and give him praise. (might take about 15 minutes)
  2. Contrition: Ask forgiveness for the sins and offences. (about 15 minutes)
  3. Supplication: Pray for my needs and all my other intentions.
  4. Read Psalms/or any Scripture or Liturgy of the hours: I read one psalm that might be appropriate for my personal situation or feelings of that day or week. I also read meditations/ Scripture from the 'Adoration Companion' book I bought from Magnificat magazine.
  5. Pray the Rosary/Divine Mercy Chaplet.
  6. Sit quietly and just 'be' in the presence of God: Look at Jesus and enjoy being in the company of Him as a friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. I have experienced so much blessings and peace from just looking at Jesus in the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

In the Gospel, the Lord calls us to perseverance in prayer. Pray without ceasing. Watch and pray. The prayer of adoration allows me to welcome His love and mercy which never changes, to take the time of reflection in silence to root myself  in Christ. Eucharistic Adoration gives me  the strength to transform my  everyday relationships by giving them the true meaning of human love. I pray that more members of our community will take the opportunity to spend an hour in  the presence of our lord and receive His abundant Mercy and love.”
