The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing that is received by those who may be ill or suffering, not only physically but also mentally or spiritually, or from the effects of advanced age. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to the love and saving power of Christ Jesus. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ in a mystical way. Through this Sacrament, the Church carries out Jesus’ mission of compassion and healing for the sick and the assurance of God's steadfast care.
"Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the priests of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven."
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at any time, upon request. In case of emergency (extreme illness or near death), please contact our Pastoral Care Desk (919-468-6142) to request a priest to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick.
