A Message from Alex Hill
Dear Friends, 
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that my last day as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Michael will be Sunday, November 16. I have accepted a position as Director of Music and Liturgy at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington beginning Monday, November 17. I’m sorry this is happening so quickly, but the need at the basilica is immediate.
As some of you might know, my wife of 40 years, Andrea, and most of our six children reside in Wilmington. When I began at St. Michael in 2021, Andrea and I were following God’s call in two places – she as Director of the City Ballet in Wilmington, and I at St. Michael’s in Cary. Despite the physical separation, we have both deeply loved our work and the communities we serve.
However, we believe God is now calling us to be together. To facilitate that, He has provided me with an incredible opportunity at the basilica in Wilmington. According to church teaching, a minor basilica is required to meet the highest levels of liturgical practice and catechesis – in short, to be a holy place where the faithful both experience and learn about the sacred liturgy. These are the two disciplines that bring me the greatest joy and professional fulfillment.
I have deeply loved serving all of you in the St. Michael community and thank you for graciously encouraging my work here these past four years. The pain I feel by leaving this parish is lessened somewhat by the knowledge that I’ll continue my professional vocation in sacred music at a beautiful basilica and better fulfill my personal vocation as a husband and father by my presence in Wilmington.
I am also grateful for the St. Michael staff who are such a joy to work with. And I especially appreciate my Music and Liturgy colleague Jennifer Hebert, whose musical, liturgical, and organizational skills have been invaluable to me over the past 17 months. Thank you for your continued dedication to this parish, and for allowing me to serve as your Director of Music and Liturgy. You will be in my prayers, as I hope to be in yours.

Queridos Amigos,
Es con el corazón apesadumbrado que les escribo para informarles que mi último día como Director de Música y Liturgia en San Miguel será el domingo 16 de Noviembre. He aceptado un puesto como Director de Música y Liturgia en la Basílica Santuario de Santa María en Wilmington, a partir del lunes 17 de Noviembre. Lamento que esto suceda de manera tan rápida, pero la necesidad en la Basílica es inmediata.
Como algunos de ustedes saben, mi esposa Andrea, con quien llevo 40 años de matrimonio, y la mayoría de nuestros seis hijos residen en Wilmington. Cuando comencé en San Miguel en 2021, Andrea y yo estábamos siguiendo el llamado de Dios en dos lugares: ella como Directora del City Ballet en Wilmington, y yo en San Miguel en Cary. A pesar de la separación física, ambos hemos amado profundamente nuestro trabajo y las comunidades a las que servimos.
Sin embargo, creemos que Dios nos está llamando ahora a estar juntos. Para facilitarlo, me ha brindado una oportunidad increíble en la Basílica de Wilmington. Según la enseñanza de la Iglesia, una basílica menor debe cumplir con los más altos estándares de práctica litúrgica y catequesis; en pocas palabras, ser un lugar sagrado donde los fieles tanto experimenten como aprendan sobre la liturgia sagrada. Estas son las dos disciplinas que me brindan la mayor alegría y realización profesional.
He amado profundamente servir a todos ustedes en la comunidad de San Miguel y les agradezco por haber alentado mi trabajo aquí con tanta generosidad durante estos últimos cuatro años. El dolor que siento al dejar esta parroquia se ve algo mitigado por la certeza de que continuaré mi vocación profesional en música sacra en una hermosa basílica, y de que podré cumplir mejor mi vocación personal como esposo y padre al estar presente con mi familia en Wilmington.
También estoy agradecido por el personal de San Miguel, con quienes ha sido un verdadero placer trabajar. Y aprecio especialmente a mi colega en Música y Liturgia, Jennifer Hebert, cuyas habilidades musicales, litúrgicas y organizativas han sido invaluables para mí durante estos últimos 17 meses.
