A Message from Father Scott
My Dear People,
Yesterday, with great joy and gratitude to God, we watched as white smoke poured out from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St. Peter rang, signaling the election of a new pope. What a surprise we received when Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, was announced as the new Holy Father and the first American elected to the Chair of St. Peter.
The election of a new pope is a sacred moment in the life of the Church—a reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to guide us, even in uncertain times. Pope Leo XIV now takes up the mantle of St. Peter, entrusted with the care of the universal Church, to confirm us in faith and lead us closer to Christ.
Pope Leo’s first words to the world were:
Peace be with you all. Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd who gave His life for the flock of God. I too would like this greeting of peace to enter our hearts, to reach your families: to all people wherever they may be, to all nations, to the whole earth: peace be with you.
This is the peace of the Risen Christ: a disarmed peace, a disarming peace, humble and persevering, it comes from God, God who loves us all unconditionally.
The Holy Father went on to say:
I am a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian, who said: “With you I am a Christian, for you I am a Bishop.” In this spirit, we can all walk together toward that homeland which God has prepared for us.
To the Church of Rome, a special greeting: we must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to welcome—like this square with open arms—all those who need our presence.
Such powerful and important words from our new Chief Shepherd. Do not ever forget what he said about the unconditional love of God for every person!
We now unite in prayer for our new Holy Father as he begins this mission. May the Lord grant him wisdom, courage, and a shepherd’s heart. Let us also continue to pray for the Church throughout the world, that we may be renewed in our fidelity to the Gospel and our witness to God’s love.
We will give thanks at the Masses this weekend for our new Holy Father as he begins his Petrine Ministry, leading us in faith and in love. And in this month of May, may our Blessed Mother intercede for Pope Leo XIV as he begins his pontificate.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
Ayer, con gran alegría y gratitud a Dios, vimos cómo salía humo blanco de la chimenea de la Capilla Sixtina y repicaban las campanas de San Pedro, anunciando la elección de un nuevo papa. ¡Qué sorpresa nos llevamos cuando el cardenal Robert Prevost, ahora papa León XIV, fue anunciado como el nuevo Santo Padre y el primer estadounidense elegido para la Cátedra de San Pedro!
La elección de un nuevo papa es un momento sagrado en la vida de la Iglesia: un recordatorio de que el Espíritu Santo continúa guiándonos, incluso en tiempos de incertidumbre. El papa León XIV asume ahora el manto de san Pedro, a quien se le ha confiado el cuidado de la Iglesia universal, para confirmarnos en la fe y acercarnos a Cristo.
Las primeras palabras del papa León XIV al mundo fueron:
La paz sea con todos ustedes. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, este es el primer saludo de Cristo resucitado, el Buen Pastor que dio su vida por el rebaño de Dios. Yo también quisiera que este saludo de paz llegara a nuestros corazones, a sus familias: a todas las personas, dondequiera que estén; a todas las naciones, a toda la tierra: la paz sea con ustedes.
Esta es la paz de Cristo Resucitado: una paz desarmada, una paz desarmante, humilde y perseverante, que viene de Dios, Dios que nos ama a todos incondicionalmente.
El Santo Padre continuó diciendo:
Soy hijo de san Agustín, un agustino, quien dijo: «Con ustedes soy cristiano, para ustedes soy obispo». Con este espíritu, podemos caminar todos juntos hacia la patria que Dios nos ha preparado.
A la Iglesia de Roma, un saludo especial: debemos buscar juntos cómo ser una Iglesia misionera, una Iglesia que construye puentes, dialoga, siempre abierta a acoger —como esta plaza con los brazos abiertos— a todos aquellos que necesitan nuestra presencia.
Palabras tan poderosas e importantes de nuestro nuevo Pastor Supremo. ¡No olviden nunca lo que dijo sobre el amor incondicional de Dios por cada persona!
Nos unimos en oración por nuestro nuevo Santo Padre al comenzar su misión. Que el Señor le conceda sabiduría, valentía y un corazón de pastor. Sigamos orando también por la Iglesia en todo el mundo, para que seamos renovados en nuestra fidelidad al Evangelio y en nuestro testimonio del amor de Dios.
Daremos gracias en las misas de este fin de semana por nuestro nuevo Santo Padre, al comenzar su Ministerio Petrino, guiándonos en la fe y el amor. Y en este mes de mayo, que nuestra Santísima Madre interceda por el papa León XIV al comenzar su pontificado.
