First Holy Communion, the reception of the Eucharist for the first time, is a pivotal moment in one's life. As Catholics, we firmly believe that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus. As such, we provide formation for students to help them prepare to receive this great gift.

WHEN DO STUDENTS MAKE FIRST COMMUNION?
Children may receive Communion once they reach the age of reason and understand the mystery according to their capacity. This is typically around the age of seven.
HOW LONG IS COMMUNION PREPARATION?
The Diocese of Raleigh calls for two years of sacramental preparation for families with children preparing for First Communion. These are traditionally done in first and second grade.
WHEN ARE FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION CLASSES HELD?
We have two options for preparation.
Traditional First Communion classes meet on Sundays from September- May from 3:00 pm-4:15 pm at the St. Michael School building.
Family Faith at Home program meets on the first Monday of each month from 5:00 pm – 6:15 pm (location will be sent to participants).
St Michael Faith Formation Department registration is closed for our 2025-2026 catechetical formation programs.

Students in their first year of formation will experience the parish community of other children their age coming together to learn about God and his love for them. This is a foundational year to prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Our Year Two students will celebrate their First Reconciliation (Confession) and learn about the Eucharist through lessons and activities in the classroom. First Holy Communion will be in May of the second year.
