Votive Candles Are Back!

We are pleased to have votive candles back once again in the church! As Fr. Michael mentioned in August, these new wax candles are permanently replacing the electric lights which had been used previously. Of course, wax candles require more maintenance and are constantly used up, so in this way they truly represent the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and our own prayer sacrifices rising to heaven as we remember those for whom we light the candle.

There are two racks of votives – one on the Blessed Mother side of the church in front of the Divine Mercy image, and the other on the St. Joseph side in front of the icon of St. Martin de Porres.

You may light a votive candle for any intention: for the repose of the soul of a deceased loved one; for a special intention for yourself or another person; in thanksgiving for some blessing you’ve received; for any prayer intention, really. Lighting a candle in either location may or may not be for the intercession of St. Martin de Porres or in devotion to Divine Mercy. Your candle may be lit for the intercession of any saint you wish, or none at all.

Traditionally we make a monetary donation for each candle we light, and there are small “Offering” receptacles one the wall next to each rack of votives. This is part of the “sacrificial” nature of our prayer intention. Offer whatever amount you feel you can. We’ll have a small committee of devoted parishioners – our “St. Lucy Guild” (named for one whose name means “light”) – who will periodically check the candles and replace them when needed. Each candle will burn for approximately 15 hours.

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6)
