First Reconciliation and First Communion:

When should my child begin preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist?

Canonically the age for the preparation and reception of the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is age 7. This involves regular mass attendance, Faith Formation classes, parent meetings, and family workshops. If your child is enrolled in a Catholic School, the weekday Faith Formation classes are not necessary.
Parents of children ages 5 or 6 anticipating First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in the near future, please note that one year of religious education is necessary to enter the preparation year at age 7.

What if my child has not been baptized?

Older children needing the Sacrament of Baptism must:

  • Contact the Elementary Faith Formation Office at 468-6120
  • Provide a Birth Certificate.
  • Enroll/Attend (in) the Faith Formation classes at the appropriate grade/age.
  • Attend Catechumenate classes two Sundays per month.

What if my child was baptized in another Christian faith?

Parents of children who were baptized in another Christian faith must:

  • Contact the Elementary Faith Formation Office at 468-6120
  • Provide a copy of the Baptismal Certificate.
  • Attend regular Faith Formation Classes as well as those classes and workshops preparing for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
  • Have a Sponsor who is a practicing Roman Catholic.
  • Make a Profession of Faith at a Sunday Liturgy prior to the reception of the sacraments.
