THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK

"May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up." - Code of Canon Law, 847

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful sacrament of healing. While most commonly known to be received before death, it can be received at any time received by those who are ill or suffering, not only physically, but also mentally or spiritually. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to the love and saving power of Christ Jesus. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ in a mystical way. Through this Sacrament, the Church carries out Jesus’ mission of compassion and healing for the sick.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at any time, upon request. In case of emergency (extreme illness or near death), please contact our Pastoral Care Desk 919.468.6142 to request a priest to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick (after hours call 919.368.0150).
